All associates within an organization have a natural bias to be either a Hunter or a Farmer. At times, everyone does both, however trying to force a Hunter to farm or a Farmer to hunt is like trying to make a left handed person use their right hand. It doesn't work very well.
Both Hunters and Farmers are essential for an organization to function on a day-to-day basis much less be effective enough to execute their organization's strategy. It's even possible and desirable for Hunters and Farmers to work well together as a team.
Hunters are people that are easily bored when assigned routine tasks or goals. Hunters are always challenging the status quo. They want to break the existing controlled processes and replace them with new processes that eliminate defects, reduce cost or improve functionality.
Farmers on the other hand like structure. They like the repetition of the existing controlled processes and perform them very well.
Strategy Execution is always more effective when organizations understand the natural bias of their Hunter and. Farmer associates. Repetitive type process goals should be assigned to the organization's Farmer associates. Conversely, groundbreaking change initiatives should be assigned to their Hunter associates.
